About Josephmark

A better future happens by design – and at Josephmark, we are a venture studio specialising in design, digital product, and venture strategy. We partner with passionate people and like-minded companies to envision a better way to work, live, and play: whether that’s bringing a pre-seed startup from 0 to seed through our VaaS model, breathing new life into legacy brand identities, or crafting new digital products and brands that propel the world forward.

About the team

JM is made up of designers, developers, strategists, writers, storytellers, shapers, and technologists. We are a mission-driven team looking to build the future we want to see. Our studios work collaboratively across Australia (Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast) and Los Angeles.

Where do you fit in?

As 2D motion designer, your mission will be to deliver boundary-pushing work that inspires and educates others. You're as comfy with generating concepts as you are with delivering high-end motion projects. A deep collaborator with your team, clients, freelancers and vendors alike, you're detail-oriented, passionate, and a creative at heart. You practice world-class design excellence by not only delivering best practices but exploring new territory to refine and regenerate – taking stakeholders on the journey with you. You have a wealth of hands-on experience with all aspects of digital media production in the bag.

In this role you will:

  • support Josephmark and Breeder clients for motion design work related to product, branding, and marketing
  • design and create high-quality motion assets
  • manage and execute editing and post-production of impactful video content
  • lead and deliver projects on time and within budget
  • create work that has impact (inspire and influence internally and externally)

You should have:

  • 3+ years industry experience
  • strong 2D motion design + animation skills, and solid motion editing skills
  • experience in visual design + concept generation
  • a thorough understanding of the motion design process (and industry)
  • the ability to execute on other peoples' ideas

What’s in it for you?

Equity: We believe in the ventures we work on so much that we invest in them ourselves. Ultimately, we want our legacy to be a portfolio of ventures that make the world a better place. As a JM employee, you have the opportunity to think and act like an investor by participating in our unique equity scheme, JM Tokens. The hours you work are tallied into tokens that you can invest into our ever-expanding venture portfolio. In a liquidity event for a venture, your tokens will pay cash dividends (and your tokens remain yours for life).

Growth: We can promise that you'll be challenged and intellectually stretched by the projects you work on. In an industry filled with shifts and changes, the sky’s the limit for your career progression – and we offer generous personal and professional development grants to help get you there.

Balance: We know you have a rich personal life outside of work (and at JM we love hearing about and celebrating your side hustles). We offer enhanced annual leave benefits, your birthday off, gender-equal paid parental leave and fully flexible working.

A sense of purpose: Every project we work on is heavily vetted to ensure it’s aligned with our mission and values. Unlike many other business models, we don't say yes to every brief that comes through the door. You’re guaranteed to work on world-class products, brand new startups, and your very own ideas to create a better future by design.

Belonging: At JM, we know better products start with diverse teams. We are an inclusive workplace committed to fostering a sense of thriving and belonging for all. That's why we strongly (see bold and underline usage) encourage members of underrepresented communities to apply. If you share our values and our venture mindset, you’ll find a home (with your work bffs) at Josephmark.

Fun: We host events, retreats and field trips on the reg both URL and IRL (when it's COVID safe).

P.S. If you’re reading this and thinking, “Oh no, I only tick a few of those boxes so I’m not going to apply...”, don’t be silly. If you’re a standout human, we want to hear from you!

Jay Van Deurse, Designer

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve worked on at JM? One of the first projects I worked on still shines as one of my favourites. EarthOffset (now Monty) is combatting the climate crisis with a solution that’s accessible for everyone: composting. It allowed me to get my hands dirty (pun most definitely intended) testing and improving my strategic and design thinking. Plus, Monty were absolute gems to work with – truly inspiring to see their drive to change the world.

How long have you been in the industry for? I’m closing in on my first anniversary as an official designer. However, I have worked in the startup space for the last three years. Wearing many hats as a founder, I soon realised that the design hat was the one I loved to wear the most. I decided to dive into my passion and build those skills.

What’s the best thing about working at JM? High performance and support. Everyone’s super talented, but no one has an ego. If you need help, time or advice, you will receive it. It makes being a junior rewarding, as you can pick brains and get support from the best. Plus, work is a lot easier when you genuinely enjoy the company of the people beside you (even if that’s remotely).

What’s the worst thing about working at JM? The fast-paced nature of our work can take its toll, but that’s the industry and that’s why we love it. When feeling the burn, it’s great to remember that the team around you are always there. Team retreats are the perfect way to unwind and remind us of why we do this!

What’s something people might not know about being a designer at JM? You get to delve into so much more than just design. Over the past year I’ve had the chance be a strategist, a marketer, a motion designer, a UI and UX designer and even a developer (…even if very basic).

What advice do you have for anyone looking to kick off their design career? Immerse yourself. Keep heading to places and sites that inspire you and think about what makes it appealing to. Experiment with your own work and be critical to see how you could improve it.
