As a team, we’ve innovated and strategized for emerging and existing ventures, brands and technologies that are shaping our collective future. Our growth trajectory means we’re looking to appoint a Finance and Operations Coordinator to be based in our LA office.

About the team

JM is made up of designers, developers, strategists, writers, storytellers, shapers, and technologists. We are a mission-driven team looking to build the future we want to see. Our studios work collaboratively across Australia (Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast) and Los Angeles.

Where do you fit in?

As the Finance & Operations Coordinator, your mission will be to bring a high level of initiative and enthusiasm to foster a sense of connection, and deeply understand our business to problem solve. You’re a kind, cool, savvy operator with an aptitude for learning + leveraging new technology to carry out processes.

In this role you will:

  • Be a critical part of both the finance & operations teams, owning the general administrative support for the US team.
  • Assist our Finance Manager with general support, including accounts payable/receivable, month-end and year-end preparation, balance sheet reconciliations, journal posting, and applicable reviews for all group entities.
  • Provide general administrative support to the LA team, including group inbox and virtual mailbox management.
  • Support and foster cross-studio initiatives, meetings, and communications. You’ll be the first point-of-contact for the team on questions around HR matters and general studio ongoings.
  • Own the digital and physical studio domain, including ensuring everyone has the tools and equipment they need to get their best work done.
  • Be the face of our culture - you will get to organise fun events for the team and be a champion for culture both remotely and in person when we get together

You should have:

  • Ideally 3-5 years experience in a similar role, if you come from a design or venture studio, that's great but we’re open to all industries and all levels of experience
  • Business, Commerce, Accounting or Bookkeeping qualifications or experience
  • General understanding of taxation laws and processes
  • Payroll experience (highly desirable)
  • Excellent prioritization and organization skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Good common sense and critical thinking skills
  • A general sense of fun with a can-do attitude

This is a full-time position that offers a competitive salary, equity across the Josephmark venture portfolio and flexible working hours. We prefer this position to be in close proximity to our LA (PST) office and applicants who can align with our Brisbane (AEST) HQ for cross-collaboration projects.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve worked on at JM? A standout project for me was working on a brand and content strategy for a residency aimed at established documentary filmmakers of color. In addition to the program being unique and forward-thinking in the film industry, the client was razor-sharp and an absolute inspiration to work for.

How long have you been in the industry for? Just for the time I’ve worked at JM, so since 2019. Before that, I was a Curatorial Assistant at the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive.

What’s the best thing about working at JM? The people. Special shoutout to the JM LA team in particular. We’re a wild, snarky, and hard-working team!

What’s the worst thing about working at JM? We don’t always get to choose what we work on, which means you inevitably have to work on projects that don’t give you life energy sometimes.

What’s something people might not know about doing what you do at JM? A lot of my role is like gazing into a crystal ball or reading palms: I have to be able to foresee where our team’s energy will be day to day, predict where people’s ups and downs might be, why, and how to stay ahead of it.

What advice do you have for anyone looking to grow into a role like yours? Don’t be a control freak. Most projects will veer off course and not go the way you planned. Adapt, be flexible, and give people time and space to do the best job they can.
